Celebrating 150 Years of Public Education

From a small coastal school room to generations of learning — join us in celebrating this remarkable milestone.

Past Parents, Students, Teachers, Families and the Gerringong Public School community:
We are excited to invite you to join us in our celebrations to commemorate 150 years of public education in Gerringong.

Our Story

Connected to this PlaceShaped by this Community

When Gerringong Public School first opened its doors in 1876, the town was a hardworking coastal community— its families clearing land, farming dairy, and building a community on the majestic lands of Dharawal Country. The school was born from that same spirit: a collective belief that every child deserved a quality education.

For 150 years, Gerringong Public School has been more than a place of learning. It has been the heartbeat of this community — where childhood friendships became lifelong bonds, where the children of dairy farmers and fishermen sat alongside the children of newcomers, and where generation after generation was taught to believe in their own potential.

Our motto, "We Will Achieve," has rung true across every generation. From the children who once walked dusty roads to school, to today's students arriving from across Australia and the globe— the story of this school is the story of Gerringong itself.

2026 - Opening the Time Capsule

Despite the rainy weather, Gerringong Public School enjoyed a memorable morning opening its time capsule, which was buried in 1994—the year our school moved from the old school park to its current location. Teachers from 1994 returned to join the occasion, lending a hand with the digging alongside former Principal Neil Proudfoot.

The capsule was opened in the library, where Mr Proudfoot carefully explained the significance of its contents. Our students engaged with the retired teachers, asking thoughtful questions that were met with enthusiasm and stories from the past.

Although many items showed signs of damage, we are committed to preserving these treasures by making copies for classroom use and creating displays in preparation for our 150th anniversary celebration in August.

A big thank you goes to our SRC students, Stage 1 classes, and all our special visitors who made the event so special.
